Initial results of the second nationwide mobile network measurement
Year of issue 2026
Date of issue 2026.07.09
The second national “Mobilfunkmesswoche” (mobile network measurement week) took place from 24 June to 1 July 2026. The measurement week is a joint initiative of the federal government, federal states and municipalities.
Throughout the measurement week, more than 60,000 users measured coverage at nearly 20 million test points with the app. Prior to the measurement week, around 2 million test points were usually recorded per week.
“We would like to thank all those who took part. The measurement week results show that broadband technology is available in a very large proportion of the country. In particular, further progress has been made in the 5G networks’ expansion,”
said Dr Daniela Brönstrup, Vice President of the Bundesnetzagentur. “However we will continue to keep a special focus on those locations where a good data connection is still not available. Here, too, users should have access as soon as possible to fast mobile communications.”
4G and 5G technology accounted for a vast majority (around 98%) of the test points. Last year 4G and 5G had a similar share of the test points, however this year the share of 5G in the test points has risen to nearly 70%. Less than 1% of the test points were for 2G, which is a decrease of 1.24% from the previous year. As in the previous year, no coverage was available at less than 1% of the test points.
The most test points were located in Germany’s most populous federal state, North Rhine-Westphalia. The Bundesnetzagentur will publish diagrams and tables showing the regional results at the district level at the end of July on www.breitbandmessung.de.
Data usage
Users can use the Bundesnetzagentur’s Mobilfunk-Check app to measure the availability of their mobile communications network. The respective network availability (no network, 2G, 4G, 5G) is stored on the smartphone and transmitted to the broadband speed checker.
The data from the test points is added to the Bundesnetzagentur’s network check map. The data shows how users experience mobile communications and can be filtered by region. The map is updated weekly. Data from the current measurement week is already shown in the map.
As part of its mobile communications monitoring the Bundesnetzagentur uses the data to check the information provided by mobile providers. The data also forms the basis of talks with the network operators. With the help of the data the federal states and local authorities can identify those specific areas where the measurement data shows unusual readings and commission their own measurement tests.
The map and further information (in German) on the Mobilfunk-Check and broadband speed checker can be found on the broadband speed checker website (https://breitbandmessung.de).
The mobile communications monitoring data is published at https://gigabitgrundbuch.bund.de (in German).
