The Bundesnetzagentur has today published gas supply figures for the year 2024. The figures are based on data taken from SMARD, the Bundesnetzagentur’s energy market data platform.
Gas consumption slightly higher than previous year
Germany consumed a total of 844 TWh of gas in 2024, which is 3.5% more than in 2023 (811.5 TWh). Household and commercial customers accounted for about 39% of Germany’s total consumption and industrial customers for 61%. German gas consumption was 14% below the average for the years 2018 to 2021. Household and commercial customers reduced their consumption by 17% and industrial customers by 12%.
Temperatures had an effect on gas consumption as well. They were, on average, nearly 0.9 degrees higher in 2024 than the average for 2018 to 2021. February, in particular, was 4.4 degrees above the average for the month, whereas January and December were each around 0.5 degrees colder than the same month in previous years.
Gas imports and exports
German gas imports were 865 TWh, according to preliminary data (2023: 968 TWh). The largest suppliers of gas were Norway (48%), the Netherlands (25%) and Belgium (18%). 69 TWh of natural gas were imported via the German LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel, Lubmin and Mukran, making up 8% of all imports.
Exports amounted to 89 TWh, a clear decrease from 187 TWh the year before. Germany exported most gas to the Netherlands (34%), Czechia (33%) and Austria (14%).
Domestic production sites generated 36 TWh of natural gas in 2024 (2023: 37 TWh). Germany has its own gas fields on a small scale. Gas is also injected into the system from other processes, the main one being biogas production.
Gas storage facilities
There were still statutory requirements for storage levels at German gas facilities in 2024. These set a target of 85% for 1 October and 95% for 1 November. Both targets were met considerably earlier in 2024. Storage facilities reached a level of 85% as early as July 2024 and 98% on 3 November. The current level at gas storage facilities is 77%. Gas has been continuously taken out of storage since 4 November. Although the storage level at the beginning of January is well below that of the previous year (91%), it is still within the range expected for this time of year.
