Bundesnetzagentur publishes new data on fixed and mobile coverage
Year of issue 2024
Date of issue 2024.12.05
The Bundesnetzagentur has updated the “Gigabit-Grundbuch” (gigabit register) with new data. The “Breitbandatlas” (broadband atlas) shows improvements in fixed coverage. Across all technologies, more than 76% of households in Germany have access to gigabit-capable connections. The “Mobilfunk-Monitoring” (mobile communications monitoring) shows that around 93.2% of Germany’s surface area has 5G coverage.
The gigabit register also has some new features. New mobile communications monitoring maps make it easier to view the availability of mobile broadband technologies and a new download area provides quick access to relevant data.
Fixed coverage: new data in the broadband atlas
Updated figures in the broadband atlas of the gigabit register show progress in fibre coverage in Germany. Coverage across the country increased by about 3.5 percentage points in the first half of the year to 36.8%. Across all technologies, in mid-2024 gigabit-capable connections were available to 76.5% of households.
The broadband atlas is a publicly available portal in the gigabit register. It shows coverage technologies and transmission speeds on various scales up to raster cells of 100 m by 100 m. It is based on address-specific data provided by nearly 380 telecommunications companies under obligation to supply data.
Mobile coverage: mobile communications monitoring with new data and maps
The latest figures from the mobile communications monitoring show that about 98% of Germany’s surface area already has broadband mobile coverage. Around 93.2% of the country has 5G coverage. In the majority of cases, 5G coverage is provided using 5G Standalone (5G SA), the most advanced mobile technology currently available. 5G SA coverage has increased by 5.8 percentage points compared with the previous year. The interactive mobile communications monitoring map has a new “mobile broadband” feature that can be used to show geographical coverage with 4G, 5G or both technologies.
The operator-neutral map also shows where there are still white and grey spots in Germany. White spots are areas without any broadband mobile coverage at all. Grey spots are areas where coverage is provided by at least one operator but not by all of them.
Single download area for maps, data and more
In addition to the interactive functions, information can be downloaded from the gigabit register. There is a new, single download area that provides easy access to all the maps, tables and processable data from the broadband atlas and the mobile communications monitoring.
About the gigabit register
The mobile communications monitoring and the broadband atlas are part of the gigabit registers. The aim of the gigabit register is to make fixed and mobile network rollout planning easier for companies and generally create transparency as regards the availability of broadband networks. The portal provides central access to the relevant geographic information systems. It gives users access to data, maps and additional information relating to digital infrastructure via a single platform.
