Results of the innovation auction and biomethane installation auction that closed for bids on 1 September 2024

The Bundesnetzagentur has today announced the results of the innovation auction that closed for bids on 1 September 2024. The innovation auction was more than three times oversubscribed.

"The significant oversubscription in the innovation auction follows on from the trend set in the auctions for ground-mounted solar photovoltaic systems. The high level of participation gives rise to the hope that growth in the field of installation combinations will also strengthen and stabilise," said Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur.

In the auction for biomethane installations that closed for bids on the same date, the only bid submitted had to be disqualified.

Innovation auction significantly oversubscribed

In the innovation auctions, bids can only be submitted for wind or solar installations combined with facilities with secured generation. The volume put up for auction was 583 megawatts (MW). A total of 154 bids with a volume of 1,856 MW were received, of which 50 bids with a combined volume of 587 MW were successful.

As in previous auctions, the vast majority of the bids were for combinations of solar installations and storage facilities. For the first time, bids were received for wind installations combined with storage facilities, but unfortunately none of these bids, which together comprised a volume of 91 MW, were successful. Out of the 154 bids submitted, 18 were disqualified from the auction procedure.

The prices of the successful bids ranged from 6.74 cents per kilowatt hour (ct/kWh) to 7.45 ct/kWh. The average volume-weighted award price was 7.09 ct/kWh, which is considerably lower than both the price ceiling of 9.18 ct/kWh and the previous auction's average volume-weighted award price of 8.33 ct/kWh.

The federal states with the largest volumes awarded were Bavaria (25 awards with a combined volume of 227 MW) and, with significantly lower volumes, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (7 awards and 115 MW) and Rhineland-Palatinate (3 awards and 57 MW).

Next steps

The statistics for the auctions are updated after each auction.

The next auction for biomethane installations will close for bids on 1 April 2025 and the next innovation auction on 1 May 2025.
