Results of August onshore wind auction
Year of issue 2024
Date of issue 2024.09.17
The Bundesnetzagentur has today published the results of the auction for onshore wind farms that closed for bids on 1 August 2024.
"This auction has set a record for the highest bid volume ever. The bid volume of nearly three gigawatts easily surpassed the volume of 2.5 gigawatts that was needed to meet the annual expansion target,"
said Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur.
Record volume of nearly three gigawatts
The auction was for a volume of 2,709 megawatts (MW). There were 239 bids submitted for a total of 2,961 MW. This was the first oversubscribed auction since February 2022. The auction resulted in 230 successful bids with a total volume of 2,723 MW. Only one bid had to be excluded from the tendering procedure.
The Bundesnetzagentur had reduced the tender volume prior to the auction from 4.1 to 2.7 gigawatts (GW). Data available up until then indicated the auction might be undersubscribed. The volume of bids submitted exceeded the reduced value because, compared with the previous bidding rounds, an unusually high number of bids was submitted with older permits. Projects that were not awarded volume can participate again in the next bidding round in November. By 18 October 2024 the Bundesnetzagentur will use information available at that time to determine the tender volume for the next auction.
The prices of the successful bids in the pay-as-bid auction ranged from 5.73 cents per kilowatt hour (ct/kWh) to 7.35 ct/kWh. As in the previous rounds the average volume-weighted award price in this round was 7.33 ct/kWh, which was only slightly below the maximum price (7.35 ct/kWh).
The federal state with by far the most volume awarded was North Rhine-Westphalia (756 MW, 84 successful bids), followed by Brandenburg (385 MW, 23 successful bids), Schleswig-Holstein (285 MW, 24 successful bids), Hesse (246 MW, 8 successful bids) and Lower Saxony (237 MW, 24 successful bids). In southern Germany, Bavaria had eight successful bids with a total volume of 101 MW. Baden-Württemberg had no successful bids.
