Progress in grid expansion: Bundesnetzagentur completes approval procedure for line between Grafenrheinfeld and Großgartach

The Bundesnetzagentur has given its approval for the last section of the planned power line between Grafenrheinfeld and Großgartach. The lawmakers had decided that the section did not need to undergo federal sectoral planning, which made the approval process considerably quicker. The planning approval decision means that TenneT can now begin work on the line.

Section between Grafenrheinfeld and Rittershausen

The section that has now been approved is approximately 50 kilometres long. The plan is to reinforce the existing extra-high voltage line with an additional electric circuit. Electricity transmission is also to be improved with dynamic line monitoring. This will enable more electricity to be transported in colder than in warmer months.

The whole section of the extra-high voltage line is located in Bavaria. The power line begins south-west of Rittershausen and first runs north-east, then north-west of Ochsenfurt across the River Main and the B13 major road, and then north. It then runs east of Theilheim and Rottendorf, crossing the A3 and A7 motorways and the B8 road. The line crosses the River Main again as well as the Garstadter Holz nature conservation area south-west of Grafenrheinfeld and ends at Grafenrheinfeld substation.

The Bundesnetzagentur plans to publish the planning approval decision on its website between 9 September 2024 and 23 September 2024. More information can be found in the local press and online at www.netzausbau.de/vorhaben20-1 (in German).

Background

The power line has a total length of approximately 149 kilometres and will link up Grafenrheinfeld (Bavaria) and Großgartach (Baden-Württemberg) grid connection points with Kupferzell (Baden-Württemberg). The transmission system operators plan to reinforce sections 1 and 2 of the line between Grafenrheinfeld and Kupferzell grid connection points with an additional 380 kilovolt electric circuit. The plan is also to replace existing cables and pylons with new ones for section 3 of the line between Kupferzell and Großgartach, which will mainly run along the current route.

The project serves to increase the transmission capacity between Bavaria and the north-east of Baden-Württemberg´.
