The Bundesnetzagentur has today completed the planning approval procedure for the extra-high voltage line between Wullenstetten connection point in Bavaria and Niederwangen connection point in Baden-Württemberg. The line is approximately 88 kilometres long and runs from Senden to Wangen im Allgäu.

Grid reinforcement between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg

New conductors will be installed on the section of the line between Wullenstetten connection point and Dellmensingen substation. On the remaining section between the substation and Niederwangen connection point, which is approximately 75 kilometres long, Amprion will be replacing the existing conductors with higher-capacity ones.

The line runs west from Wullenstetten connection point across the border with Baden-Württemberg to Dellmensingen substation. The line then runs south to the substation at Niederwangen connection point in Wangen im Allgäu. The new line will mainly take the same route as the existing line. Near the Ringschnait part of Biberach, for example, the line runs slightly further west to relieve the town.

The Bundesnetzagentur will publish the planning approval decision on its website between 9 September 2024 and 23 September 2024. More information can be found in the local press and online at www.netzausbau.de/vorhaben25 (in German).

Background

The project serves to increase the transmission capacity between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. The need for capacity to transport electricity has increased as a result of the energy transition. The project involves adding and replacing cables, with additional conductors being installed on existing pylons and existing conductors being replaced with new ones. When the work is finished, the power line will have two 380 kV circuits. The line is due to go into operation in 2027.
