The Bundesnetzagentur has today given its approval for the longest section of the power line between Vieselbach and Mecklar. The section runs from Vieselbach in Thuringia to the border with Hesse.

Increasing transmission capacity

Network operator 50Hertz plans to replace the existing conductors with higher-capacity high-temperature superconductors and renew 28 existing pylons. These measures will enable the power line to transport more electricity. The section of the line concerned is approximately 87 kilometres long. It begins at Vieselbach substation and ends between Wartha in Thuringia and Herleshausen in Hesse. Today's approval means that 50Hertz can now begin work on the measures.

The Bundesnetzagentur plans to publish the planning approval decision on its website on 16 September 2024. More information can be found in the local press and online at www.netzausbau.de/vorhaben12A (in German).

Background

The project involves replacing the cables on an existing 380 kV overhead line between Vieselbach in Thuringia and Mecklar in Hesse. The old conductors on the western section of the line will be replaced by new high-temperature superconductors. This will help to increase transmission capacity between the two federal states. The power line transports excess energy from Germany's eastern federal states to states in the south of the country. The project has been part of the Federal Requirements Plan since 2013.
