The Bundesnetzagentur has today published the results of onshore wind and innovation auctions that closed for bids on 1 May 2024.

Onshore wind auction

"With bids submitted for nearly 2.5 gigawatts, this auction set a new record and confirmed the upward trend of bids and approval numbers," said Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur. "If this positive trend continues then the expansion targets for onshore wind are within reach."

The auction was for a volume of 2,795 megawatts (MW). A total of 197 bids with a volume of 2,485 MW were received. Volumes at this level had not been seen since the 2017 bidding rounds. The auction resulted in 189 bids with a total volume of 2,379 MW being awarded. Eight bids had to be excluded from the tendering procedure.

The total volume bid in this round nearly reached the target volume of 2.5 gigawatts (GW) set out in the Renewable Energy Sources Act, though it was well below the actual available tender volume of 4.1 GW (since last year's auction volumes were not exhausted). The volume not awarded last year has been carried over to this year's auctions.

The prices of the successful bids in the pay-as-bid auction ranged from 7.20 cents per kilowatt hour (ct/kWh) to 7.35 ct/kWh. As in the previous rounds the average volume-weighted award price in this round was 7.33 ct/kWh, which was only slightly below the maximum price (7.35 ct/kWh).

The regional breakdown of the sites for which bids were awarded is similar to the previous auctions. The federal states with the largest volumes awarded were North Rhine-Westphalia (68 awards with a combined volume of 727 MW), Lower Saxony (26 awards, 430 MW) and Schleswig-Holstein (17 awards, 318 MW).

Innovation auction

Bids in the innovation auctions are only accepted for combinations of wind farms or solar installations with facilities that have secured generation. The auction volume was 583 MW and 48 bids with a total bid volume of 564 MW were submitted. All bids submitted were for combinations of solar installations and storage facilities. Five bids were excluded in this round, leaving a total of 43 successful bids with a combined volume of 512 MW.

The prices of the successful bids ranged from 6.78  ct/kWh to 9.17 ct/kWh. The average volume-weighted award price in this round (8.33 ct/kWh) was the same as in the previous bidding round. It was well below the maximum price of 9.18 ct/kWh.

The federal states with the largest volumes awarded for sites were Bavaria (24 awards with a combined volume of 245 MW) and, with significantly lower volumes, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (4 awards, 79 MW) and Schleswig-Holstein (5 awards, 73 MW).

Next steps

The statistics for the auctions are updated after each auction.

The next onshore wind auction will close for bids on 1 August 2024 and the next innovation auction will end on 1 September 2024.
