Bundesnetzagentur updates interactive mobile communications map

The Bundesnetzagentur has extended the interactive map on mobile communications monitoring to include the network coverage of 1&1 Mobilfunk GmbH and has published information on underserved areas in the Gigabit Register.

Data on 1&1 Mobilfunk GmbH mobile coverage

From today the Gigabit Register includes data on mobile coverage provided by 1&1 Mobilfunk GmbH, which has been operating its own public mobile network since 8 December 2023. 1&1 also uses the Telefónica Germany GmbH & Co. OHG network under national roaming arrangements to provide coverage for its customers. The updated mobile communications map therefore uses different shades of colour to distinguish between the network operated by 1&1 itself and the Telefónica roaming network that it uses. Before it started network operations in December 2023, 1&1 only offered internet access at a fixed location via fixed wireless access, for which it used its own 5G network infrastructure.

Map of Germany with grey and white spots

The Bundesnetzagentur has also updated the mobile communications map to include the grey and white spots in coverage with at least 4G. The map is available for download.

White spots are areas without any broadband mobile coverage at all. Grey spots are areas where coverage is provided by at least one operator but not by all of them. The map overview shows those regions where complete rollout of the mobile networks is proving difficult, not least because of the topography. This means that the grey and white spots are primarily found in mountainous areas, such as in the Harz or Black Forest regions. In Germany, white spots currently cover around two percent of the surface area and grey spots around 15%.

Current 5G coverage

As at January 2024, 91% of Germany receives 5G coverage provided by at least one network operator. When the first data were collected in October 2021, coverage was at around 53%.

Mobile communications monitoring

Mobile communications monitoring collects all the relevant data on mobile communications coverage in Germany. The interactive mobile communications map of the Bundesnetzagentur shows current mobile coverage in Germany from a consumer perspective. The data for the mobile communications maps are provided by the four operators of the public mobile communications networks, Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica Deutschland and 1&1, in line with the Bundesnetzagentur's requirements.

The Bundesnetzagentur checks the data for comparability and plausibility against the findings of the dead spot app, amongst others. In addition, the data are checked using the results of random measurements by its own radio monitoring and inspection service. The data are updated every quarter.

Data on mobile communications monitoring are published under https://gigabitgrundbuch.bund.de.
