The Bundesnetzagentur has published the Railway Market Analysis 2023.
Railway market sees continued recovery in 2022. Revenue increases in all rail transport services.
Following the decline in 2020 and 2021 that was caused by the pandemic, the railway market experienced significant recovery during the 2022 reporting period. Revenue across all transport services rose by around 15% to €23.8bn, with long-distance transport registering the biggest increase both in terms of percentages and in actual figures.
Stagnating competitive situation
The share of rail passenger transport performance that competitors accounted for remained unchanged compared to the previous year. In rail freight transport the competitors managed to slightly increase their share.
Punctuality
Punctuality of transport services continued to decline. For the market as a whole the share of delays rose significantly and continued to approach the 20% mark. Infrastructure construction work increasingly affected the operational quality of railway transport.
Growing number of personnel
The number of employees in the railway infrastructure sector continued to grow in 2022. While railway undertakings saw an increase in personnel, the number of train drivers stagnated. Many railway undertakings continue to report difficulties in finding qualified personnel or trainees.
The report has been published on the Bundesnetzagentur's website at www.bundesnetzagentur.de/eisenbahn-marktuntersuchung (in German). Printed copies of the report are available on request.
