Year of issue 2023
Date of issue 2023.12.15

The Bundesnetzagentur has today published the results of the auction for onshore wind farms that closed for bids on 1 November 2023.

Auction again undersubscribed

The auction for onshore wind energy that closed on 1 November 2023 was undersubscribed.

"It gives me hope to see that in 2023 twice as much volume was successfully awarded as last year. To meet expansion targets the trend of significant increases will need to continue," said Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur.

The auction was for a volume of 2,087 megawatts (MW). A total of 167 bids with a volume of 1,981 MW were received. Only two bids had to be disqualified in this round due to formal errors, so there were 165 successful bids. A total of 1,967 MW were awarded. That has brought the total volume awarded in 2023 to 6,377 MW, nearly twice as much as in 2022 (3,225 MW).

The prices of the winning bids ranged from 5.88 cents per kilowatt hour (ct/kWh) to the price ceiling of 7.35 ct/kWh. The average volume-weighted bid price was 7.31 ct/kWh, just below the price ceiling and very close to the previous round's average of 7.32 ct/kWh.

The regional breakdown of the sites for which bids were awarded is similar to the previous auction. The two federal states with the largest volumes awarded were again Schleswig-Holstein (416 MW, 42 awards) and Lower Saxony (312 MW, 25 awards), followed by North Rhine-Westphalia (309 MW, 31 awards) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (222 MW, 16 awards).
