The Bundesnetzagentur has approved the SuedLink connection to the converter in Bergrheinfeld.

This involves a section of approximately 0.6 kilometres. With the route firmly decided, TenneT can now commence construction work to connect the planned converter to the Bergrheinfeld/West substation.

Bergrheinfeld/West converter station - Bergrheinfeld/West grid connection point

The cable route starts at the planned converter station at Bergrheinfeld/West south of the "Felsenhof" and runs east of the wooded area parallel to the driveway as far as the substation in Bergrheinfeld. The connection will be made via overhead cables over three pylons.

The planning approval will be on public display in the Bergrheinfeld municipality from 29 November 2023 until 13 December 2023. The information will also be published by the Bundesnetzagentur in German at www.netzausbau.de/vorhaben4-d3.

With today's approval, the Bundesnetzagentur has updated the status of its network expansion forecast and the expected progress in its approval procedures. This is available in German at www.netzausbau.de/netzausbauprognose.

SuedLink - a major axis for the energy transition

SuedLink is intended to transport offshore wind power from the North Sea to the densely populated regions of southern Germany along the Main and Neckar rivers. It consists of two direct current lines, which run parallel along most of the route.

Project 3, as it is referred to, connects Brunsbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein with Großgartach/Leingarten in Baden-Württemberg. Project 4 runs from Wilster to Bergrheinfeld in Bavaria. Both cables are to be laid as underground cables. Only the connections between the substations at the grid connection points and the converter stations located before them will be implemented as overhead lines.

The German transmission system operators, TenneT and TransnetBW, are responsible for planning, establishing and operating the SuedLink.
