The Bundesnetzagentur has approved the first eleven projects for the Gaia-X funding competition. The initial group of eleven was selected from among over 130 project outlines submitted.

The Bundesnetzagentur has sent funding award notices to 114 project partners. A total of about €117.4m in funding will be awarded up to the end of 2024. The competition is organised by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).

"The projects are innovative and of a high quality. They successfully demonstrate the economic viability and usability of digital technologies and applications for Gaia-X" said Dr Wilhelm Eschweiler, Bundesnetzagentur Vice President. "The flagship projects will make an important contribution to meeting the goals of the stimulus package and thus also to realising digital transformation in Germany and Europe."

Dr Franziska Brantner, Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMWK, officially presented the winning consortia with their funding award notices.

Uses of Gaia-X in practice

The funded projects are of supraregional importance and come from the education, financial, healthcare, construction, mobility, aerospace, maritime and public sectors. The aim of the projects is to put applications based on Gaia-X into practice.

The specific implementation of the projects will be accompanied by research commissioned by the BMWK and carried out by acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering.

The Bundesnetzagentur will also monitor the projects for their duration, ensuring that the funding flows according to requirements and that funds are used for their intended purpose in the projects.
