International and European activities
Work in international bodies
Europe is growing together more and more, and cooperation and the exchange of experience have become essential for successful regulation beyond Europe's borders. Against this background, the Bundesnetzagentur is not only a member of various European and international bodies as part of its own remit (section 198 of the Telecommunications Act – TKG), it also participates in the work of numerous European and international institutions and their specialist committees on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV).
The department for international relations/postal regulation oversees cooperation in the areas of telecommunications, energy, post and railways, primarily with other European regulatory authorities and the European Commission, but also with supranational bodies and organisations. This ensures that Germany's positions are represented, whilst strengthening cooperation within the European Union and cohesion in the international community.
Popular point of contact
The Bundesnetzagentur is also a popular point of contact for numerous foreign authorities (regulatory bodies from all sectors, including competition authorities) and other government organisations (such as ministries). Primarily of interest are the Bundesnetzagentur's specific regulatory practices in the individual sectors, along with the common features of regulating various sectors. The Bundesnetzagentur has seen its profile at international level raised, not least as a result of its role as a multi-sector regulator.
