Maritime and inland waterways

New radio technologies and applications are being used for maritime and inland waterways communications to meet the constantly increasing transport requirements efficiently, ecologically, swiftly and safely. The new technologies and applications include tracking systems (LRIT), satellite identification systems (AIS data), digital radiotelephony (DSC) and man overboard systems.

The relevant (harmonised) European standards are developed by ETSI's ERM committee.

The Bundesnetzagentur plays its part in the standardisation process by ensuring proper regard for efficient and interference-free frequency usage and hence the safety-related aspects. Furthermore, interoperability must be guaranteed. Consumer protection issues play a key role particularly in respect of radio equipment on board sports and leisure boats and ships.
