Machine to machine (M2M)
M2M is a generic concept covering a wide range of technologies enabling the automated exchange of information and data between machines themselves or via a central data processing system. M2M is used in many different areas such as e-health (remote patient health monitoring), automotive engineering, industrial automation, and smart utility metering (electricity, gas and water meters with remote reading and other functions). On account of the broad scope of M2M, standardisation takes place in various bodies each usually dealing with only certain fields of application.
