Aeronautical radio

Since 2005 ground-based radio equipment used by air traffic management services (eg for radiotelephony, navigation, radiodetermination) has been subject to the provisions of the R&TTE Directive (1999/5/EC) which has been superseded by Directive 2014/53/EU. The relevant harmonised European standards dealing with aeronautical equipment are being modified or produced by ETSI ERM TG AERO in line with the new requirements, especially the essential requirements in Article 3(2) of the Radio Equipment Directive. The TG is also responsible for ground aeronautical systems and constituents for EATMN.

The Bundesnetzagentur's role in this work centres on guaranteeing effective and interference-free frequency usage and the interoperability of equipment and applications. Furthermore, since the aeronautical service is a safety-related service, it is the Bundesnetzagentur's task to represent and, where necessary, support national safety interests.
