Numbering

The Bundesnetzagentur carries out the sovereign task of numbering. It is responsible for the structuring and design of the numbering space to satisfy the requirements of end-users, telecommunications network operators and telecommunications service providers.

Numbers are character strings that serve the purpose of addressing in telecommunications networks. All the numbers used for a particular type of addressing are referred to as a numbering space. A distinction is made between telephone numbers and technical numbers.

Telephone numbers are numbers which, when dialled in the public telephone service, allow a connection to be set up to a specific destination.

All numbers that are not telephone numbers are referred to as technical numbers. Technical numbers are used for a wide range of purposes.

Telephone numbers

The German numbering space is the part identified by the country code 49 of the international numbering space. The main numbers are geographic numbers and mobile numbers. In addition, there are several other types of numbers, for which numbering ranges have been provided.

Specific numbers in the German numbering space are provided for the different telecommunications services.
