Pri­vate Busi­ness Ra­dio (PBR)

PBR is a category of private mobile radio (PMR) and can be divided into different user groups, some of which are represented by umbrella organisations and interest groups.

User Groups

PBR user groups, defined by task, includetrading enterprises, craft enterprises, commercial enterprises, authorities, industrial enterprises, (passenger and goods) transport companies, taxi and car hire companies, public and local utility companies, rescue services, social services, and medical professions.

PBR Networks

PBR networks usually have a base station (headquarters) and a number of (in-vehicle and/or portable) mobile stations, and a typical coverage range of between 10 km and 15 km. The service area of PBR networks without a base station is taken to be a particular geographic region, for example "Frankfurt city".

Frequencies

Frequencies in the following bands have been designated for PBR:

• 34.75-34.95 MHz
• 68.00-87.50 MHz
• 146.00-174.00 MHz
• 443.00-444.00 MHz
• 455.00-460.00 MHz
• 465.00-470.00 MHz

Given the limited spectrum resources available, frequencies are generally assigned for shared use.

Frequency Assignment

Radio frequencies for PBR networks are normally assigned by the Federal Network Agency's regional office responsible for the area of operation. The frequency assignment specifies the parameters related to the intended use, such as location, channel bandwidth, modulation, transmitter power, antenna height and antenna type, but may also lay down usage restrictions designed to ensure compatibility with other frequency users.

Interconnection with Public Telecommunications Networks

PBR networks may under certain conditions be connected to public telecoms networks for the purposes of speech transmission, subject to special prior approval from the Federal Network Agency.
